A communication material like a radio ad is an audio marketing message transmitted over the radio or other streaming platforms. The primary scope or a radio ad is to promote products or services or simply to transmit a single message.
Radio ads usually last 15-60 seconds and they employ voice overs, music and sound effects to make it more appealing and to capture the attention of the target audience.
A radio ad is produced in three stages: pre-production, production, testing and evaluation of the material.
A. Pre-production stage – the editorial staff prepares the script of the radio ad bearing in mind the following considerations:
1. Discussion among the editorial staff – the editorial staff meets for brainstorming. The focus of this is to understand all the aspects related to the radio ad being produced (e.g. what the service is all about, its advantages, and how this can benefit the target audience). Knowing all this information can provide the editorial staff the framework to write and prepare the material.
2. Identify the target audience – to what specific audience do you intend to convey the radio ad? The answer to this question is essential before the ad is produced via radio. Target demographics can be male or female, age, geographic location, social status.
3. Craft an engaging script for the audience – most people who are listening to a radio program are doing something, like cooking, cleaning the house or driving a car. So, when the music or the program makes a pause, they are likely to change stations. The script should be engaging enough to stop them from doing that. It is thus advisable to start with a word, phrase, a piece of music that can invite the target audience to continue listening.
4. Give a message that contains one idea – a radio ad should contain only one principal message in order to be effective. This message should also be mentioned and repeated several times within the ad. This holds true even for short radio ads.
5. Use a credible source of information – people believe in persons who they deem as credible. For this reason, feature a reliable source of information to help you convey the message of the radio ad. This could be doctors, famous opinion leaders, health workers.
6. Be creative, original and spontaneous – try modern ideas and styles. Be creative and don’t be afraid to dare. Words are also important radio ads. So be spontaneous and natural. Craft your ad bearing in mind that you are talking to an audience that tends to be bored easily.
7. Make your audience feel – it’s important to touch the hearts of your audience with appropriate words, sounds and music. Let them feel something after listening to your radio ad. The voice and sound effects should evoke visuals that can make the target audience imagine things and feel things.
8. Develop familiarity with your radio ad – this can be attained by using the same familiar voice, tune or song or a jingle, in all the radio ad and other communication materials associated with your message. The audience can easily connect that familiar sound with the message.
9. Persuade your audience to take action – a call to action is essential in the success of the radio ad being produced. This is achieved by using explicit words that persuade the target audience to do what the radio ad would like them to do.
B. Production stage – at this point, recording takes place. All the voice tracks in the script are recorded. Then, this is mixed with the chosen music and sound effects by means of the audio console. This is usually done by the audio operator, following the script and time allotted for the radio ad.
C. Testing and Evaluation stage – the recorded radio ad is tested among preset listeners by the editorial staff. Feedbacks from this preset listeners are important to evaluate the efficacy of the radio ad. At the end, the radio ad goes on air once this meets the evaluation standards of the editorial staff.
As a conclusion, a radio ad is a communication material that aims to promote a product or service or simply to transmit a message. A radio ad is relayed over the radio or in other streaming platforms. Effective radio ads should make use of a creative script and a combination of voice overs and sound effects to make it more engaging and to attract with its message the attention of the target audience.
